Core Holdings of the Tormey-Holder Collection: Artist Unknown
Frederick Albrecht Vethake (1756-1810),
Prussian-Born Immigrant to Federalist Era America
1 9/16 x 2 1/16 inches (sight)
watercolor on ivory; housed in a gilt metal pendant frame
It has been suggested that this portrait was painted by Frederick Kemmelmeyer, but research has been unable to confirm whether Vethake and Kemmelmeyer were ever in the same city at the same time. It is believed that this portrait was painted in Boston, upon Vethake's arrival to that city from Dutch Guyana (where Vethake first lived after leaving Prussia, before ultimately immigrating to the United States).
