Young Jacksonian Era LadyDepicted Among Clouds
 Americancirca 1830
 by James Passmore Smith (1803-1888)
1 3/8 x 1 5/8 inches (sight) watercolor on ivory; housed under glass in a gilt metalcase with a cast foliate border and bail
One might easily assume that this is a mourning portrait for the younglady (thus, presumably deceased when painted), but Smith often
painted the background of portraits with bold sky and cloud designs.
Thus, the young lady was more likely very much alive when her
 portrait was painted.
