American Artist: James Passmore Smith

Young Jacksonian Era Lady
Depicted Among Clouds
American
circa 1830
by James Passmore Smith (1803-1888)
1 3/8 x 1 5/8 inches (sight)
watercolor on ivory; housed under glass in a gilt metal
case with a cast foliate border and bail
One might easily assume that this is a mourning portrait for the young
lady (thus, presumably deceased when painted), but Smith often
painted the background of portraits with bold sky and cloud designs.
Thus, the young lady was more likely very much alive when her
portrait was painted.
