engraved to the reverse, "Dorothy Stretton, / Obt. 24th May, 1784 / Æt. 62"

 

About the Artist: Patrick John McMorland (spelled McMoreland in some sources) was born in Scotland in 1741. After working for a period in Scotland, he is known to have been in Manchester (1774-1777, and 1791-1800), London (1777) and Liverpool (1781). Exhibited in London at the Society of Artists (1774, 1775) at the Royal Academy of Arts (1776-1782) and in Liverpool (1784-1787). Lectured on art in Manchester in 1809. In addition to miniature portraits in watercolor on ivory, he also painted miniatures in enamel, landscapes and seascapes. Known to have works on display at the British Museum (London), the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford) and Dunham Massey Hall (Cheshire, Greater Manchester). Listed by Blättel (pages 626, 627), Foskett (page 595) and Schidlof (pages 521, 522)*
